🔴 Do This Right Now While You Wait for Us
- 1 Call (647) 550-4220 — we'll dispatch a technician immediately and give you an ETA
- 2 Check your thermostat — make sure it's set to Heat and the temperature is set above room temperature. Replace batteries if it's battery-powered.
- 3 Check your furnace filter — a completely clogged filter can trip the limit switch and shut the furnace off. If it's visibly grey and blocked, replace it.
- 4 Check your breaker panel — locate the furnace breaker (usually labelled "furnace" or "HVAC") and confirm it hasn't tripped. If it's between ON and OFF, flip it fully OFF then ON.
- 5 Press the furnace reset button — most furnaces have a small red or yellow reset button on the burner assembly. Press it once. Do NOT press it more than once — repeated resets can flood the combustion chamber with gas.

The Most Common Furnace Failures in London Ontario Winters
London winters push furnaces hard. These are the failures we fix most often — and most can be resolved the same night.
Dirty or Failed Flame Sensor
The most common furnace failure. The flame sensor gets coated with oxidation and can no longer confirm the burner is lit — so the furnace shuts off after a few seconds of running. Usually a 30-minute fix.
Failed Hot Surface Igniter
The igniter is a fragile element that glows to ignite the burner. It burns out over time — particularly in furnaces 7+ years old. When it fails, the furnace tries to start but no flame appears.
Blocked Condensate Drain
High-efficiency furnaces produce condensation that drains through a small tube. When that tube clogs with algae or debris, the pressure switch trips and shuts the furnace down as a safety measure.
Tripped Limit Switch
The limit switch shuts the furnace off when it overheats — usually caused by a clogged air filter blocking airflow. Replace the filter, let the furnace cool, and it will often restart. If not, the switch itself may need replacing.
Failed Control Board
The furnace's brain. When it fails, the furnace simply won't respond to anything — no ignition attempt, no error codes, or error codes that loop. Diagnosis requires a technician. Repair or replacement depends on board cost vs furnace age.
Failed Inducer Motor
The inducer motor vents combustion gases before ignition starts. If it fails or seizes, the pressure switch won't close and the furnace won't attempt to ignite. You may hear a humming or grinding before total failure.
Cracked Heat Exchanger
The most serious furnace failure — a crack allows combustion gases (including carbon monoxide) to enter your living space. This is a safety emergency. The furnace must be shut down immediately. Repair is typically not cost-effective; replacement is usually recommended.
Gas Valve or Pressure Issues
A failed gas valve prevents gas from reaching the burner. Low gas pressure from the supply line — less common but possible in extreme cold when demand spikes — produces the same result. Always checked as part of diagnosis.
